connections to monitoring systems

ability to push notifications to / pull reports from a notification system (i.e. icinga, solarwinds) so alerts can be setup if a backup for a device has not occurred in x hours/days/etc.

Would a feature to run a pre-defined shell command on backup failure be enough?
So you could use whatever native method your NMS provides to interact with it.
Would that be enough, or do you think the interaction with NMS systems should be handled differently?
